Someone has died — how do I handle the energy contract?

DIRECT ANSWER

Quick action saves 2-4 weeks of advance. We give the 5-step protocol for heir or executor.

Step plan:

  1. Obtain certificate of death or inheritance (municipality or notary)
  2. Call or email supplier within 14 days of deathprovide date of death + meter reading on that date
  3. Choosecontinue in heir's name (often most practical when home is sold/let), terminate (on immediate sale), or vacancy tariff (briefly empty)
  4. Request final statement up to date of death to the IBAN of the heir/executor
  5. Keep confirmation + invoicerelevant for estate settlement and any Tax Office queries. Things not going as promised? Written dispute of billing AFTER date of death — it has no legal basis (see also: mag-leverancier-bij-overlijden-direct-doorberekenen).
