What happens to an energy contract on death — can the supplier keep billing?
On death the personal contract ends by operation of law. Heirs may choose: continue, terminate, or sign a new contract. We explain the steps.
On the contract holder's death the energy contract ends automatically per death date (BW art. 7:5 + standard terms). Heirs or executor must notify the supplier as soon as possible + supply end reading. Three options: (1) continue in heir's name — usually possible within 30 days with no termination fee; (2) terminate per death date — final statement with reading at date of death; (3) vacancy (unoccupied) — temporarily lower advance, fixed fees continue. NOT allowed: continued billing in the deceased's name AFTER date of death — that's a debt without legal ground. Terminate in writing with a copy of the death certificate; final statement within 6 weeks to the heir's IBAN.
