I smell gas at home — what should I do immediately?

Gas leak emergency protocol (Netbeheer Nederland): (1) Immediately call National Outage Number 0800-9009 (24/7, free); (2) Close the main valve (usually at the gas meter); (3) Open windows and doors; (4) NO open flames, no switches on/off, do not switch electrical appliances — sparks can ignite gas; (5) Leave the premises on strong smell and await the technician outside. The grid operator responds within 60 minutes and repairs free of charge if the cause is in the distribution network. After: request a report + cause confirmation. On damages from leakage (evacuation, spoiled food, structural): formal damage claim to grid operator possible (BW 6:174). Keep photos and report.
