May the school monitor my child during online class?
Functional monitoring (cam/mic during class, screen-share view) allowed with basis. Wider monitoring (keylogger, off-class screen capture) not without parent consent.
Online education has its own privacy challenge — especially since Covid era multiple overreaches stood out. What is allowed? (1) Webcam/mic active during class (teacher sees you for educational purpose). (2) Pupil screen share on request (Q&A flow). (3) Attendance tracking in class. (4) Class chat history within lesson platform. (5) Test results and homework submissions. With PARENTAL CONSENT (UAVG Art. 5): wider monitoring — proctoring software during exams (Proctorio, ProctorU), keystroke loggers, automatic face analysis for "engagement". What is NOT allowed: (1) Off-class-time monitoring without concrete basis. (2) Access to private files on pupil laptop. (3) Continuous webcam recording without concrete lesson. (4) Behaviour analysis via AI ("Non-attentive students" detection) without DPIA + consent. (5) Data sharing with EdTech supplier without DPA. Education Inspectorate + AP 2024-2025: specific guideline on digital child monitoring + DPIAs for proctoring. A school still using Proctorio without DPIA + consent = enforcement priority. For parents: request school policy via Dutch FOIA. On concern: meeting request with management + works council + Education Inspectorate. AP complaint on structural violation.
