What is BSN misuse and how do I protect myself?

BSN = unique personal number with high identity-theft risk. Only share with legally entitled parties. KopieID app redacts BSN on ID copies.

The BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is a unique 9-digit number per Dutch citizen, regulated under the Dutch BSN Act (Wabb). Risk: BSN is linked to many government and healthcare systems — on misuse a fraudster can apply for loans, open bank accounts, or obtain false documents. Wabb Art. 10: only specifically designated organisations may use BSN. Others NEVER — not for "fraud check", not "just in case". Protection tips: (1) Never share BSN via WhatsApp, email, or social media. (2) For ID copies always use the KopieID app from the Dutch government — automatic redaction of BSN + passport photo serial. (3) On pay slip + ID, give it redacted to landlord / employer. (4) Check Mijn-Belastingdienst + Mijn-UWV regularly for strange actions. (5) On misuse suspicion: identity-theft protocol. On active misuse: RvIG report (BSN fraud → 1-2 weeks later "blocked BSN" marker at government bodies). Police report (Sr Art. 231b). Fines for Wabb violation: the AP issued 2023-2025 fines to gyms, hotels, dating apps for unlawful BSN use — typically €50k-€820k.
