May a shop ask for my ID?
Only for age verification, anti-fraud on large purchases, or anti-ML obligation. NOT for "customer registration" or marketing. BSN always redacted.
Shop ID inspection = personal data processing under GDPR. Only allowed with basis. Allowed in these situations: (1) Age verification on alcohol/cigarettes/games (Dutch Liquor Act Art. 20). Inspect, not copy. (2) Anti-fraud on large amount (>€10,000 cash — Dutch anti-ML) or on suspected card fraud. (3) Rental contracts for long-term leasing (car, scooter). (4) Returns of high-value product if in general terms. NOT allowed: (a) "Customer registration" for marketing — no basis. (b) Making a copy without need — use KopieID app from Dutch government to redact BSN + passport photo serial. (c) Recording BSN — NEVER allowed for commercial parties (Wabb Art. 10). (d) Visual + manually copied fields like date of birth/gender for profiles. What to do if they ask for copy? Request legal basis. No solid answer = refuse or use KopieID app. Fines for unnecessary ID copy 2023-2024 (>€50k by AP). Tip: carry a KopieID version of your ID ready in your bag — for situations where redacted version is needed.
