May an Airbnb host have cameras in the property?
Common areas: only with prior disclosure in listing. Bedroom + bathroom: NEVER, not even "off" mode. Airbnb policy 2024: total ban on indoor cameras.
Important update: Airbnb banned all indoor cameras from 30 April 2024 in listed properties (even in common areas). Reason: mounting complaints + privacy incidents. Outdoor cameras (driveway, entrance, garden) remain allowed provided disclosed in listing. Applicable Dutch law (alongside Airbnb policy): Sr Art. 139f + GDPR Art. 9 + household exception. Bedrooms + bathrooms = always prohibited, also criminal (max 6 months prison). Common areas (living room, kitchen) before 2024 allowed with disclosure — now banned by Airbnb policy. What to do if you find a hidden camera? (1) Don't disassemble — evidence. (2) Take photos + note location. (3) Immediately report Airbnb via app — almost always leads to host account suspension + full refund + alternative accommodation. (4) Local police report (Sr 139f). (5) AP complaint for GDPR aspect (extra serious violation due to special category data Art. 9). (6) Civil damages claim Art. 82 — comparable cases have yielded €5k-€25k. For hosts: immediate camera removal required since 30 April 2024. Listing disclosure is no longer an excuse.
