Data portability request (GDPR Art. 20) — template + guide

Request your data in machine-readable format (CSV/JSON) to switch providers or keep it yourself. GDPR Art. 20.

Last reviewed: 25 May 2026
Portability is the less-used GDPR right — though it offers strong privacy protection on switching. See our article Right to portability. When can you use this? Switching banks, telco, streaming service, social network, fitness app, email provider. What do you get? Personal data YOU provided (form inputs, observed behaviour like clicks/searches), in CSV/JSON/XML. NOT data derived by the business itself (credit scores, profiles). What doesn't it cover? Data of others in your account (e.g. employees in business account, other family members), data processed under legal obligation or public interest. How to request? Use our access generator (€9.99) + add: "I also invoke Art. 20 — request data in machine-readable format". Business must respond within 1 month. Our GDPR rights pack (€29) bundles 4 letters for the complete switching journey.
