Last reviewed: 25 May 2026
CCTV footage where you are recognisable = personal data = GDPR fully applies. Access right (Art. 15) also covers video. When relevant? On incident in shop + dispute, suspected employee misbehaviour, damages claim with CCTV, traffic accident at municipal camera, neighbour camera that recorded you. How to request? Written access request with: (a) specific location, (b) date + time window (as precise as possible), (c) description of yourself (clothing, other recognisable features), (d) basis ("I was in your shop at 15:30 on 14 March"). Our access generator (€9.99) can do this. Response time: 1 month. CCTV retention: typically max 4 weeks (AP guideline). Request quickly — footage may already be gone. What do you get? Footage where YOU appear — other people often blurred (others' privacy). Sometimes you receive a cut clip via secure portal. On refusal: AP complaint — CCTV is AP enforcement theme 2024-2025. For municipal CCTV: Wpg + Municipalities Act 151c apply — extra route via municipality DPO.
