Bits of Freedom — digital civil rights + research
Dutch NGO for digital civil rights. Advises, litigates, and informs about digital privacy.
Bits of Freedom (BoF) has been THE Dutch organisation for digital civil rights since 1999. What they do: (1) Policy influence — advise both chambers of Parliament on privacy legislation, recently significant impact on AI Act implementation + Dutch surveillance-law rulings. (2) Strategic litigation — class actions against mass surveillance, facial recognition, AI oversight. (3) Awareness — Big Brother Awards, blogs, podcasts. (4) Citizen support — advice + referrals for individuals in conflict with large data collectors. When to go to BoF? Not for individual privacy cases (AP/Juridisch Loket for those). Yes if your case has broader implications — e.g. a class of victims of an algorithmic selection error, a new form of government surveillance, or a court ruling with precedent value. How? Email or contact form via bitsoffreedom.nl. No phone legal aid.
