How to dispose of a microwave in Amsterdam
Microwaves do not belong in bulk waste. Drop yours off free at a Wecycle collection point (many DIY stores and supermarkets), at the shop where you buy a new one (mandatory 1-for-1 take-back), or at a Recycling Point.
Book a pickup on Amsterdam.nl →Here is how
- 1Buying a new one?The shop must take your old one for free — 1-for-1 take-back rule. Ask explicitly when ordering.
- 2No new one?Find the nearest Wecycle point at wecycle.nl/inleverpunten. Many supermarkets and DIY stores participate.
- 3Or: Recycling PointAll 6 Amsterdam Recycling Points accept small electronics for free. Bring ID + proof of address.
Do / Do not
- Unplug, coil cord neatly
- Still works? Try Marktplaats — working microwaves go for €15-30
- Glass turntable separately for recycling if intact
- Not in the regular bin — microwaves contain heavy metals
- Not in bulk waste — counts as incorrect waste presentation
- Do not open the microwave yourself — there is a high-voltage capacitor inside
Or do something better
Most bulk waste still has life. Give or sell before throwing.

Frequently asked questions
Can a microwave go in bulk waste?
Officially yes if you have no other option, but Wecycle or the retailer is better — there it goes to regular electronics recycling. Microwaves in bulk waste often end up in the incinerator.
Which supermarkets accept microwaves?
Albert Heijn XL, larger Jumbo branches, Coolblue stores, Mediamarkt and BCC accept all small electronics. Check wecycle.nl/inleverpunten for exact locations.
Do I need to prove I live in Amsterdam?
For Recycling Points: yes, ID + recent letter at your address. For Wecycle points: no, free for everyone.
What if the microwave is broken?
Does not matter — Wecycle accepts broken appliances too. In fact, that is exactly what the system is for.
