EAN code — what is it and why do you need it?
DIRECT ANSWER
The EAN code is the unique 18-digit number of your energy connection. On switching, damage claim or complaint you always need it. Where to find it.

Every energy connection (one for power, one for gas) has an EAN code: 18 digits, usually starting with "871687" (Netherlands) or "541448" (Belgium). Where:
- top of your annual statement or invoice
- in the customer portal under "Connection"
- on EANcodeboek.nl (free lookup with postcode + house number). Difference from customer or contract number: the EAN is tied to the address and stays the same on switching suppliers; the customer number changes per supplier. For damage claims to the grid operator the EAN is the ONLY thing the operator needs to identify your connection — keep it handy.
