Marktplaats fraud with a fake Tikkie link: how sellers get drained

A buyer on Marktplaats (the Dutch eBay-style marketplace) asks you to transfer one cent to "verify" your account? That's not a Tikkie — it's a phishing site.

Stats and sources
Updated: June 2026

What the numbers show

No guesses. Only published data from Fraudehelpdesk (the Dutch fraud helpline), CBS (Statistics Netherlands), AFM, SIDN and Dutch investigative journalism.

Purchase fraud (including Marktplaats fraud) rose about 35% at the Fraudehelpdesk in 2025.
Misleading sales: reports tripled from 833 (H1 2024) to 2,382 (H1 2025); losses €1.29 million.
CBS: 7% of Dutch residents (15+) were victims of purchase fraud in 2024 — by far the largest category of online fraud.
Modus operandi

How does this scam actually work in practice?

Step by step: this is how scammers build the scenario. The faster you spot the pattern, the sooner you can hang up or click away.

  1. 01
The "buyer" replies fast, wants to buy without haggling and proposes handling the transaction via "Marktplaats Bezorgservice" or their own courier.
  2. 02
You're sent a link to "verify" your bank account by transferring 1 cent (€0.01) — the link looks like tikkie.me but is actually tlkkie.me, tikkie-marktplaats.com or marktplaats-betalen.nl.
  3. 03
The page is a pixel-perfect copy of your bank login screen; everything you type is forwarded live to the scammer, who logs into your real bank session in parallel.
  4. 04
While you're filling in the "verification", your transfer limit is raised and large amounts are sent to so-called money mules.
  5. 05
Sometimes a "Marktplaats employee" guides you via WhatsApp and reassures you if you hesitate.
  6. 06
The scammer never actually sells anything themselves — they buy from unsuspecting sellers and delete the account after payment.
