Someone is stalking me online — what now?

Last reviewed: 25 May 2026
Stalking (Sr Art. 285b) is a crime — up to 3 years imprisonment. Since 2024 doxing falls under this (publishing personal data with intimidating intent). Online stalking = systematic unwanted contact, surveillance, or intimidation via internet, social media, email, SMS, or game chat. What counts as "stalking"? Repeated messages despite blocks, fake accounts to follow you, screenshotting your posts with negative commentary, location tracking via apps, making deepfakes, posting your address or workplace online. A single annoying message ≠ stalking — repeated + intrusive = yes. The process: collect evidence → block → file police report → platform reporting → engage Slachtofferhulp → (on high risk) lawyer + civil injunction. Protection via privacy law: object to every controller (Art. 21 GDPR), request erasure at Google (right to be forgotten), AP complaint if platform doesn't cooperate. On threats: on concrete threat to your safety or that of loved ones — 112. Don't wait.

Step by step

  1. Secure evidence

Take screenshots with visible URL + date/time. Export messages via "Send chat history" (WhatsApp/Telegram). Save in a folder on secure cloud — copy to a trusted person. Important: edit nothing. Police + court want the original.

  2. Block on all channels

Block on each platform separately. Make accounts private. Set "who can message me" to "friends". Remove public location tags. Adjust search privacy on Google.

  3. File police report

File a stalking report (Sr Art. 285b) — online via politie.nl or call 0900-8844. Bring the evidence. Make clear: this is repeated + unwanted + impacting you. Ask for case number.

  4. Engage platforms

Report the stalker on Meta, X, TikTok, etc. Under DSA + Terms of Service platforms have a duty to investigate. For accounts sharing your data: request erasure under GDPR Art. 17.

  5. Slachtofferhulp + specialised help

Call 0900-0101 — Slachtofferhulp assigns a case manager. For sexual component: Helpwanted.nl or Centrum Seksueel Geweld 0800-0188. For concrete threat: 112.

  6. GDPR action against platform or third parties

Platform not cooperating after DSA report? AP complaint (Art. 77 GDPR). Severe psychological harm? Civil damages claim under Art. 82 — our GDPR rights pack helps with the letters.
