Where can I swim or sunbathe nude in the Netherlands?
Only on designated nude beaches. The Netherlands has ~50 official nude-recreation locations: coastline (parts of Bloemendaal aan Zee, Wassenaar, Renesse, Schoorl), Wadden Islands (Schiermonnikoog, Vlieland, Texel paal 14), inland lakes (Sloterplas-south in Amsterdam, parts of Veluwemeer) and saunas. On regular beaches or in city parks: APV violation, fine €100–200. Topless sunbathing on regular beaches: allowed everywhere in NL, no legal ban. In your own garden: free, unless nuisance to neighbours or visible from public road.
📋 The rules
- Nude beaches are designated by the municipality with signs (official naturist symbol)
- Best-known coastal locations: Bloemendaal aan Zee (zones 1 and 2), Schoorl aan Zee, Wassenaar, Renesse
- Wadden Islands: Schiermonnikoog entire south beach, Vlieland south beach, Texel paal 14
- In Amsterdam: Sloterplas-south has a nude-recreation zone

🔓 Exceptions
- Topless on regular beach: accepted throughout NL, no legal ban

- During permitted naturist events (NFN days): also allowed outside nude beach
- Spontaneous private sauna visit at friend's: not public space = no rules
- In your own garden with fence/high screen: always free, regardless of neighbours
⚠️ Penalty if you do it anyway
€100–200 APV fine for nudity in non-designated place. Severe cases (provocation, near children): art. 239 Sr (public indecency) — possible imprisonment up to 3 months + criminal record. Filming or photographing naturists without consent: GDPR violation plus portrait right infringement, possible damages.

Can I sunbathe topless on a regular beach?
Yes, allowed throughout the Netherlands. Topless falls under “normal recreational use” and is not an APV violation. Practically: accepted everywhere, lifeguards won't say anything. For minors, lifeguard may request full swimwear.
Can I sunbathe nude in my own garden?
Yes, unless your garden is visible from a public road and neighbours complain. First complaint: municipality may ask you to add a fence or make it invisible from a window. Persistent visibility: APV fine possible. With fence/high screen: always free.
Can I be filmed on a nude beach?
No, except for private use. Filming someone on a nude beach without consent is a privacy violation under GDPR plus portrait right. Distributing photos: aggravating (handling stolen images and/or stalking). If you spot a photographer: report directly to lifeguard or police.
Can I keep clothes on in a sauna?
In most Dutch saunas and wellness resorts: no. “Textile-free” is hygienically required (wrapped in a towel is enough). Special “textile hours” do exist: swimwear required then. When in doubt: check house rules before booking.
What's the fine for nudity on a regular beach?
€100–200 APV fine for nudity in non-designated place. In severe cases (provocative, with children present): art. 239 Sr “indecent exposure”, maximum 3 months imprisonment plus criminal record. In practice: usually a warning first, fine on refusal.
What's the difference between an NFN nude beach and an informal nude zone?
NFN nude beaches: formally designated by municipality, with sign, often with facilities (toilets, parking). Informal nude zone (e.g. parts of Sloterplas, small lakes): arisen by customary right, tolerated but not legally protected. On complaint, informal zone can be re-evaluated.
Can I bring my dog to a nude beach?
Depends on the location. Bloemendaal: yes, on leash. Schiermonnikoog: in nude zone yes, in swim zone not during high season. Vlieland and Texel: most dog beaches are separate. Check signs on site for combination of dog beach + nude recreation.
