Can I have a BBQ in a park in Amsterdam?
You can only BBQ in Amsterdam parks on specifically designated BBQ fields — in Vondelpark (Roemer Visscherstraat entrance and play area), Sloterpark (large stone BBQ zone), Westerpark (south side) and a handful of other parks. On the grass, under trees, or in parks without a BBQ zone: forbidden. Gas BBQs and electric BBQs are usually allowed in designated spots; charcoal is fully banned in many parks. Fire pits (vuurkorven), campfires and open flames: never allowed in any Amsterdam park. Fine €100–250.
📋 The rules
- Only on designated BBQ fields — marked with signs
- Gas BBQs and electric BBQs allowed in designated areas
- Charcoal BBQ: completely banned in many parks, only in specific marked sections
- No fire pits, campfires or open flames in any Amsterdam park
- BBQ at least 1 metre from shrubs and trees, preferably on stone surface
- After use: extinguish coals fully with water — never in waste bins (fire risk)
- Many parks: BBQ zone open only between 1 May and 1 October
- During extreme drought (RIVM code red): city-wide BBQ ban
🔓 Exceptions
- Sloterpark has a large BBQ zone with permanent stone bays — the most relaxed rules in Amsterdam
- Vondelpark: BBQ zones at the Roemer Visscherstraat entrance and playground area
- Westerpark: BBQ field on the south side — often full on summer Sundays
- Private garden or roof terrace: legally allowed, but smoke nuisance for neighbours can trigger an APV warning
- Beatrixpark, Erasmuspark, Rembrandtpark, Flevopark: no BBQ zone, so fully forbidden
⚠️ Penalty if you do it anyway
€100 for BBQ outside designated zone. €150–250 for charcoal BBQ in banned zones. €250+ for open fire, fire pit or campfire. Fire damage to park or trees: civil liability for restoration (can run to thousands). During code-red drought: criminal liability possible. Enforcement actively patrols hot summer weekends.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Can I BBQ on my balcony in Amsterdam?
Legally: often yes, but check your tenancy contract or VvE (homeowners' association) rules. Smoke or odour nuisance for neighbours can trigger an APV warning and ultimately a fine (€100+). Charcoal is almost always refused in VvE rules. Electric or gas BBQ is usually the least problematic.
Can I BBQ in any Amsterdam park?
No. Parks without a designated BBQ zone (Beatrixpark, Erasmuspark, Rembrandtpark, Flevopark and most smaller parks) ban BBQs entirely. Check the BBQ map at maps.amsterdam.nl/bbq/ before you go.
Can I BBQ on the beach in Amsterdam?
At IJburg beach and Sloterplas: only in designated bays. At Strand Zuid: forbidden. On Dutch North Sea beaches outside Amsterdam: local rules, usually in seasonal zones between 1 April and 1 October. Charcoal and open flames on beaches: almost everywhere banned.
What do I do with hot coals after the BBQ?
Extinguish fully with water, let cool, dispose in a metal waste bin (NOT in plastic waste bins — fire risk). Sloterpark has dedicated ash containers. Unintended fire spread via hot waste is a common cause of park fires.
Can I use a fire pit (vuurkorf) in a park?
No — never, in any Amsterdam park. Fire pits, campfires and any form of open flame are completely forbidden under the APV. Fine €250+ and full civil liability for fire damage.
What's the fine for BBQing on the grass?
€100 for BBQ in a park outside the designated zone. €150–250 if you use charcoal or BBQ in a charcoal-banned area. €250+ for open flames. Enforcement can also confiscate the BBQ itself.
Can I use a gas BBQ if charcoal is banned?
In most parks: yes. Gas BBQs and electric BBQs fall under the more relaxed rule because they pose less fire risk and produce no sparks. Sloterpark, Vondelpark and Westerpark accept both. When in doubt: check the signs at the designated zone.
My neighbours are BBQing and the smoke is drifting into my window. What do I do?
Talk to them first. Neighbours often don't realise their smoke causes nuisance. If that doesn't work? Report via 14020 or meldingen.amsterdam.nl. For ongoing nuisance: use Bij Wie? for nuisance complaints to find the right help-desk (noise and smoke nuisance often go together).
