🪟 How to dispose of carpet or flooring in Amsterdam

Quick answer

Cut the carpet into rolls of max 2 m × 50 cm and tie them. Book a free bulk-waste appointment via amsterdam.nl, or self-deliver to a Recycling Point. Never fits in a normal container — must go via bulk-waste route.

Here is how

  1. 1
    Cut into manageable rolls
Max 2 meters long, max 50 cm diameter. Stanley knife, knee pad. Otherwise pickup service refuses.
  2. 2
    Tie down
Tape or rope around — loose roll = unsafe on the street. A well-tied roll counts as 1 bulk-waste item.
  3. 3
    Pickup or Recycling Point
Book on amsterdam.nl, or self-deliver. Both free for residents. Tip: keep the dust mask on, old carpet can shed.

Do / Do not

Do
  • Clean carpet less than 5 years old? Marktplaats "free to collect" works lightning fast
  • With vinyl floor: check for asbestos — pre-1994 floors can have asbestos (see asbestos page)
  • Carpet tiles separately resellable — especially modern office tiles
Do not
  • Do not place uncut outside — gets refused, counts as illegal presentation
  • No mold-infected carpet in general waste stream — separate notification at Recycling Point
  • Do not burn in a fireplace — synthetic fibers give toxic smoke

Or do something better

Most bulk waste still has life. Give or sell before throwing.

Marktplaats
Clean living-room carpet < 3 years old: often gone for free in 1 day.
Art dealer
Antique carpets or Persian rugs: never throw away without appraisal. Sometimes €100-1000+ value.
Sports club
Ground cover for clubs: call a local tennis/football/judo club, often wanted.

Frequently asked questions

How big may a carpet roll be for bulk waste?

Max 2 meters long, max 50 cm diameter, tied down. Larger rolls get refused or cut at your expense.

What if I want to remove a vinyl floor from before 1994?

Possible asbestos. DO NOT remove yourself — first lab test (€50-100) or engage a certified company. See the asbestos page for details.

Can carpet go in residual waste?

No. Too bulky and the fibers (especially synthetic) disrupt waste processing. Always bulk-waste route.

Do I get a discount at the flooring shop if I bring the old one?

Sometimes. Carpetright, Kwantum, and local interior shops often have trade-in promotions with new floor. Ask at order.
