Filing an objection against a government decision — how?
You can file a free objection against almost any government decision. (1) 6-week deadline from decision date (date at top of letter, not receipt date). Late: usually inadmissible — exception for excusable lateness (e.g. illness). (2) Write objection letter: letter to the agency that made the decision, with your name, date, decision number, why you disagree. (3) Submit: by post (registered), email or web form on government site. (4) Hearing: you can request an oral hearing — free and can help. (5) Outcome within 6-12 weeks. Rejected? Appeal at administrative court within 6 weeks (court fee €50-371 2026). Juridisch Loket (0900-8020) helps free with objection letters.
Step by step
- 1Read the decision criticallyUnderline: what is the decision, who made it, what are the reasons. At the bottom there is always a legal-remedies clause — that says how and where to object.
- 2Write your objection letterRequired: your name, address, date, “Objection to decision [number]”, why you disagree (factual + legal), what you want (decision reversed/changed), signature.
- 3Send within 6 weeksRegistered post = best proof. For email/web form: save sent confirmation. Send supporting evidence too (photos, documents). Send date counts, not receipt.
- 4Request a hearingIn objection letter: “I request to be heard orally”. Independent objections committee listens. Free. Can help to nuance points orally. Not mandatory.
- 5If rejected: appeal courtObjection decision rejected? Within 6 weeks appeal at administrative court (admin sector, district court). Court fee €50 (benefits) to €371 (other). For high stakes: higher appeal Council of State or CRvB.

Frequently asked questions
What if I missed my 6-week objection deadline?
Usually declared inadmissible. Exception: “excusable lateness” (hospitalisation, unintelligible decision, wrongly addressed letter). Send objection anyway with justification for being late.
Is filing an objection worth it? Doesn't the government always win?
No. On average 25-40% of objections are (partly) upheld. Especially Tax Office, city WMO and UWV have high success rates. Well-reasoned objection makes a difference.
Does filing an objection cost money?
No, free. Only at appeal at administrative court after rejected objection do you pay court fee (€50-371). For benefits cases and low incomes: court-fee waiver possible.
Can I delay payment during objection?
Not automatic. Tax Office: request “payment deferral pending objection”. CJIB fines and traffic: pay before first reminder — money refunded if objection upheld.
What do I do when my objection is “declared inadmissible”?
Ask why (in writing). For deadline exceedance: argue excusable lateness (illness, wrongly addressed letter). For form deficiencies: supplement and resubmit. In doubt: free Juridisch Loket or appeal at court.
Can I delay running costs/fines during objection?
Not automatic. Request “payment deferral pending objection” at Tax Office (often approved). CJIB: pay before first reminder — money refunded if objection upheld.
