Consent withdrawal (GDPR Art. 7) — template + guide

Previously gave consent and now regret it? Withdrawal must be as easy as giving (Art. 7(3)). We provide the template.

Last reviewed: 25 May 2026
GDPR Art. 7(3) is clear: "the data subject shall have the right to withdraw their consent at any time, and it shall be as easy to withdraw as to give consent". See our article Withdraw consent. When relevant? Newsletter unsubscribe that doesn't work, marketing cookies "withdraw declaration", stopping research-database participation, ending voluntary data sharing with partner. How to request? Written request with: "I hereby withdraw my consent for [specific processing] under GDPR Art. 7(3)." Business must act within reasonable time — typically 14 days, max 1 month. What MAY business NOT do? Delay confirmations, "are you sure", retention pop-ups, charge fees, ask for other consent on the spot. Important: post-withdrawal business may no longer process data on that basis. Other bases (legal obligation, contract) remain. Alongside withdrawal also request erasure (€9.99) if you want data gone. Bundle: GDPR rights pack (€29).
