Quick answer

In large parts of Amsterdam, public alcohol is banned. All of Centrum (inside the Singelgracht), De Pijp, parts of Oud-West, Plantage, Czaar Peterbuurt and all metro/tram/bus/ferry fall under a permanent alcohol ban. In quieter residential neighbourhoods (Noord, parts of Nieuw-West, Zuidoost) public drinking is technically allowed, but enforcement steps in if there's nuisance. On an official terrace or in your own garden: always free. Fine in ban zone: €100, repeat €150+.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can I drink a can of beer on the street in my own neighbourhood?

In quieter residential neighbourhoods (Noord, parts of Nieuw-West, Zuidoost): technically yes if there's no local ban. Neighbour complaints or public nuisance can trigger enforcement and a fine under the APV “public order” category.

Can I take a beer to a park in Amsterdam?

Vondelpark, Sloterpark, Westerpark: during the 2024–2026 pilot, alcohol ban active especially in peak season. Beatrixpark and smaller neighbourhood parks: usually allowed without nuisance. During large events or festivals: temporary additional ban possible.

Can I buy beer during a street party with friends?

During a permitted event with hospitality licence on location: yes, at official sale points. Drinking BYO alcohol outside a permitted zone: no, however festive it feels — ban zones remain active during festivals.

What if I step into the metro with an open beer?

Fine €180. GVB enforcers and police patrol actively, especially evenings and weekend nights. Refusing to cooperate: additional fine plus possible arrest for disturbing the peace.

Can I transport alcohol in closed packaging?

Yes. A closed bottle of wine in your backpack to a friend's is no problem. It's the drinking (open glass/can in your hand) that's banned in ban zones. Cap off: even without a sip, enforcement can act.

Where exactly is the alcohol ban boundary in Centrum?

All of central Amsterdam within the Singelgracht (the outer ring of the centre). The official map is on amsterdam.nl. Signs “Alcoholverbod” at street corners mark the zone. When in doubt: assume the ban applies.

Can I drink alcohol on Koningsdag on the street?

In designated street-party zones with hospitality permit: yes, at official sale points. Outside zones: the general ban still applies — though enforcement is less strict that day. Public nuisance: still fineable.
