Can I drink alcohol on the street in Amsterdam?
In large parts of Amsterdam, public alcohol is banned. All of Centrum (inside the Singelgracht), De Pijp, parts of Oud-West, Plantage, Czaar Peterbuurt and all metro/tram/bus/ferry fall under a permanent alcohol ban. In quieter residential neighbourhoods (Noord, parts of Nieuw-West, Zuidoost) public drinking is technically allowed, but enforcement steps in if there's nuisance. On an official terrace or in your own garden: always free. Fine in ban zone: €100, repeat €150+.

- Ban zone all of Centrum: De Wallen, canal belt, station area, Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein

- Banned on event grounds during festivals/Koningsdag/Pride

- Some parks: alcohol ban during specific periods (pilot 2024–2026)
- Open glass or bottle counts as “drinking” even if you don't take a sip
- Police can confiscate and pour out alcohol on the spot when there's nuisance

- On an official hospitality terrace: always allowed
- In your own garden or on your own balcony: free
- On a canal-cruise boat with hospitality licence: allowed

- In closed packaging (unopened bottle in a bag): transport allowed

€100 for drinking in ban zone. €150+ for repeat offence. €180+ for drinking in metro/tram. Aggression or public nuisance: arrest possible plus additional fines for disturbing the peace (€200+). Drunken violence: criminal prosecution. Sale to minors: hospitality operator faces €1,360 fine plus licence suspension.

Can I drink a can of beer on the street in my own neighbourhood?
