🆔 My identity has been stolen — where do I report it?

Direct answer

If your identity is stolen, take these four actions immediately: (1) Call CMI (Identity Fraud Centre) at 088-900 1111 — they help limit damage and guide your next steps. (2) File a police report at politie.nl/aangifte — you need the report number for banks and city. (3) Lock your bank accounts — ING 020-228 8888, Rabobank 088-246 2015, ABN AMRO 0900-0024. (4) Replace DigiD via digid.nl or call 088-123 6555. Also change all passwords and check your BKR credit registration.

Step by step

  1. 1
    Call CMI for coordination
Identity Fraud Centre (088-900 1111) is your starting point. They help prioritize what comes first (bank, DigiD, city, credit bureau) and track your progress.
  2. 2
    Police report with evidence
Via politie.nl/aangifte or in person. Bring all fraudulent mail/email/SMS, unusual bank transactions, lost documents. You get a report number.
  3. 3
    Lock bank accounts
Call your banks immediately. They lock cards, replace them, and monitor transactions. For PSPs (PayPal, etc.): contact separately.
  4. 4
    Replace DigiD
Via digid.nl or 088-123 6555. Also enable 2-step verification via the app. Without DigiD lock, the fraudster can file tax returns, request benefits, etc.
  5. 5
    BKR check + credit registry
Check at bkr.nl if new loans are registered in your name. Foreign registrations: request explanation via BKR from the lender.
  6. 6
    Engage Victim Support
Slachtofferhulp Nederland (0900-0101) provides emotional and practical support, especially when consequences persist.

Frequently asked questions

Is identity theft a crime?

Yes, since 2014. Maximum sentence 5 years (Article 231b Dutch Penal Code). The perpetrator is also civilly liable for damages you suffered.

Do I need a new passport?

Only if your passport was physically stolen. For digital identity theft (DigiD, data): passport stays valid, but call CMI anyway.

What does CMI do for me exactly?

CMI coordinates: they call banks on your behalf, help with BSN-lock at the city, communicate with Tax Authority about fraudulent filings, and centrally track your case.

Can I change my BSN (citizen service number)?

In extreme cases yes, but very rare and complex (requires city council decision). Usually securing and monitoring all accounts is enough.

Do I need to change my BSN?

BSN is not changed — too much downstream impact. Only get a new DigiD account. For persistent fraud: extra warning flag in BRP via city.

Who pays damages from identity theft?

On successful fraud: bank/supplier must prove YOU were negligent. If they can't: they bear the loss. Phishing where you gave code: shared blame. CMI helps build the case.
